The Day The Music Died

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

It’s hard to believe that 50 years ago today (February 3, 1959) the music world was rocked by an unbelievable tragedy.  Three of the biggest names in popular music were killed when their small plane unexpectedly crashed during a storm.  Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper were killed instantly.  The following video tells an amazing story of this event as seen through the eyes of singer/songwriter Don McLean who years later immortalized this event with his song – American Pie.

Incredible Moment Between a Bride and Her Dad

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

This weeks clip will show you the tremendous impact a “highly trained” DJ can have upon a party!  Accomplished and learned DJs like Cap Capello from New York are an inspiration to many within the DJ industry.  This father was unable to dance with his daughter on her wedding day.  The pre-recorded moment was meticulously staged and presented by the DJ.  These are hallmark moments that can be as powerful to a reception as the vows are to the ceremony.  This clip strongly supports why the Nevada Wedding Network encourages all wedding vendors to strongly consider referring DJs who have received “advanced level training”.

Choreographed First Dance – The Way I Are

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

I really enjoyed stumbling upon this unique “First Dance”.  It is an excellently choreographed dance that incorporates many elements, including: the entire wedding party, flowers, acting and dancing.  Very well planned and delivered with excitement.  It is always great to see members of the wedding party invest their own personal time to rehearse something of this nature.  The audience obviously loved it!

Running Of The Brides

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

It’s as much a tradition as the dropping of the ball in Times Square on New Year’s Eve – the annual “Running of the Brides” in New York City.  It’s amazingly entertaining to watch brides, their friends and family plan their strategies – scope out their territory – and sprint to the finish line of wedding fashion.  If only we could get brides to line up and come-a-runnin’ for other wedding services.  Imagine this . . . hundreds of brides lining up outside a building.  The doors open and brides excitedly scramble for position in an effort to grab photo albums from wedding photographers.  Now THAT would be photo op!

Bride Wars

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

What a way to start off the New Year!  20th Century Fox will debut “Bride Wars” in theater’s on Friday, January 9th.  This romantic comedy stars Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway as best friends who are Maids of Honor in each other’s upcoming wedding.  Through a planning error, each of their wedding dates were scheduled for the same day.  One of them has to change her date . . . but neither one will.   In the past, satyrical movies of this nature have brought us such phrases as; Bridezilla, Monster-in-Law and Wedding Crashers.  We can now add “Bride Wars” to the list of names that contribute to a satyrical stereotype of our industry.  Will it be funny?  Yes!  Will it enhance the positive perception of our profession?  Probably not!

New Year’s Eve with Dick Clark!

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

As we begin to say “goodbye” to 2008, I thought you all might enjoy reliving how we said “hello” just one year ago.  Nobody can ring in the New Year like the legendary Dick Clark!  Since his stroke in 2004, Dick has enjoyed a steady progression of improvement on his road back to recovery.  Each year is just a pleasure to see him behind the microphone celebrating with all of us.  There is simply nobody on the face of the earth whose name is more synonymous with New Years Eve, than Dick Clark.  Watch him “ring in” 2009 this year on ABC.

Cake Smash

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

While many of us find the “cake smash” to be repulsive and inappropriate . . . did you know that the earlier traditions of this were far more messy?  Centuries ago, the tradition was to break a loaf of barley bread over the brides head.  This later evolved to the breaking of oatcake or other breakable cakes over the brides head.  If you research the beginnings of this activity over the ages, you will find that it actually began as a yeast and flour “food fight” of sorts that was a fertility ritual.  Oh how the times have changed.  Kind of makes the “cake smash” seem mild by comparison – doesn’t it?  (Note:  Viewer discretion is advised!)

The Wedding of Luke & Laura

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

In November of 1981, thirty million people were glued to their television sets to witness the long awaited wedding of Laura Baldwin (Genie Francis) and Luke Spenser (Anthony Geary), the romantic stars of the T.V. soap opera – General Hospital.     In one of the most anticipated nuptuals ever filmed, the excitement and media surrounding this event was every bit as intense as a real wedding.  Nearly every magazine (including Newsweek) ran feature stories highlighting the fictional wedding.  Hard to believe it has been 27 years since this episode first aired.
