Innovative Perspectives Workshop from Commonly Different
by Michael Escalera
On November 7th and 8th, something different happened in Reno. Four highly successful photographers came together to host a local workshop for anyone looking to improve their imagery, start a photography business, or take their existing business to the next level.
Michael Imus, Trevor & Tourine Johnstone, and Michael Escalera collectively brought over 20 years of photographic experience to their workshop titled Innovative Perspectives. Throughout the two-day event, students were encouraged to look at life in a different way and gain a new perspective on their creativity, business, work flow, and inspiration for their art.
The first day opened with an icebreaker breakfast and time spent with everyone getting to know each other. Michael Imus and Tourine Johnstone presented their classes in the morning and taught the students how to be a visionary and standout from the crowd through creating unique images and running a streamlined business.
After the catered lunch, Trevor Johnstone showed today’s digital photographers how to create and maintain an efficient work flow system and Michael Escalera closed the classroom portion of the day by teaching the students about finding inspiration through having a career and passion in photography. Everyone was then invited to a local restaurant for an evening of fun, food, and networking with each other!
Day two brought an exciting aspect to the workshop—a hands on model session! All of the students were invited to photograph with the instructors and were each given an opportunity to direct and photograph every one of the five models as they saw fit. The open environment to work side by side with the instructors was the perfect compliment to the learning experience from day one.
After the model session, every photographer downloaded the images to their laptops and chose their eight favorite images to process using creative software. The images were then shown on a plasma TV and were critiqued by the instructors. This ensured every student received constructive feedback on their photographs with positives and negatives and more help being offered. This segment of day two was a highly informative time and brought Innovative Perspectives to a great close.
The workshop was a huge success as stated by the students all asking when the next event will occur! Even with the many factors that united the four photographers and their classes, they each had their own style of teaching and seeing the world. That’s what made them Commonly Different.
